The Chainsmokers are a disc jockey/producer duo consisting of Andrew Taggart (born in 1990) and Alex Pall (born in 1985) from New York City, United States. Andrew Taggart was born in Portland, ME. He was a member of the Love Team. Alex Pall was born in 1985 in New York City. Pall studied art at New York University, while Taggart studied at Syracuse University. In 2012, they came together as a DJ duo. The Chainsmokers formed as electronic dance music producer DJs in 2012 under the management company 4AM in New York City. In 2012, they collaborated with Indian actress and recording artist Priyanka Chopra for the song 'Erase', which was released on November 19, 2012, on Beatport. On December 4, 2012, the song was released to iTunes Store for digital download. Their first promoted single, 'Selfie', was released on January 28, 2014, on Dim Mak Records. The duo have since shared nights with dj:s like Calvin Harris, Avicii, Bingo Players, Swanky Tunes, Arty, Pete Tong, R3Hab, Wolfgang Gartner, Max Vangeli, Alesso, Steve Aoki, Chuckie and W&W. Based out of New York, the duo came together back in 2012. They started off to build a fan following by remixing some popular indie tracks. In 2012, they released a single titled 'Erase' with Priyanka Chopra, an Indian actress and singer. But what actually gave them the big break and made them the sensation they are today was '#SELFIE'. The video has over 500 million views on YouTube and growing.
They followed up '#SELFIE' with 'Kanye'. 'The song is about what it means to be like Kanye. It's about just owning it no matter what you're doing', Alex Pall told Buzzfeed in an interview, explaining that Kanye should be thought of as an adjective. 'Whether you're on top of the world partying in a penthouse or you're driving an old car playing your favorite song, it's about enjoying the moment you're in and feeling like you're the king.”
After that there was seemingly no looking back for the duo. It certainly looked as if they had cracked the formula for the perfect combination of electronic beats and melodic vocals. Some of their biggest hits of 2015 were 'Roses' featuring ROZES, 'Let You Go' featuring Great Good Fine Ok, 'Waterbed' featuring Waterbed. Each release seemed to be doing better than before and made them a sure shot king of the dance music industry. They topped off 2015 with a release with Tiesto called 'Split (Only U)' which was an instant hit at the clubs.
Their biggest year probably to date might have been 2016, with 2 very major releases 'Closer' featuring Halsey and 'Don't Let Me Down' featuring Daya. Both of the songs hit platinum status and were a huge commerical success. In 2017, they released their highly anticipated collaboration with Coldplay titled 'Something Just Like This'. They released their debut studio album, 'Memories...Do Not Open', in April 2017.
